We’ll be the first to say that worrying about someone knowing if you’ve read their text is a little ridiculous. Reading the message is the whole point of texting, and yet… we can also admit that there are strategic reasons why you might want a message to appear unread.
How to Read a Text Message on iPhone Without Opening It
Many messaging services, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter DMs, support read receipts, which notify the sender when you’ve opened their message. iPhone users who send iMessages can also turn on read receipts, with a nice caveat: They’re very easy to bypass.

On iOS, you can turn the read receipts option on or off in the Settings app, under Messages, or within individual conversations by tapping the person or group at the top, tapping Info, then toggling Send Read Receipts on or off.
