Google Assistant is, in theory, a useful part of the Android ecosystem. It helps you set reminders, make calls, and even identify a song for you. But at the same time, it’s still something vying for your attention. If you find yourself accidentally activating Google Assistant every now and then, or if you just plain get fed up with it, you can disable it on your Android phone and on Google’s smart speakers (though you can’t disable it entirely on the latter, since it’s the primary way you interact with the speaker).
How-To: Disable Google Assistant – Android
It starts in the Google app on your Android smartphone. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner and select the Settings option. You can also use Google Assistant itself to get here (ironic!) by saying, “OK Google, open Google Assistant settings.”
A Popular settings section will appear at the top; scroll down a bit to find the All settings section, which lists all the settings options alphabetically. In this section, choose the General option. Finally, tap the toggle next to Google Assistant to turn this feature off.
You may find Google Assistant very useful, but you just don’t like the fact that it activates randomly, even when you haven’t consciously said “Hey Google” or “Okay Google.”
