To unlock a new character, you need to increase your player rank, which you do by completing the main missions and their sub-objectives. There are three biomes in the game, each with its own missions, and when you hover over them with your mouse, you will see the list of objectives for those missions.

If you manage to complete the level with all the objectives, you will get one player rank for the level and more from individual objectives.
