As with all software, it’s a good idea to keep Safari up to date: Apple is always releasing security updates to Safari and macOS to protect Macs from potential exploits. Plus, if you’re having problems with Safari, chances are it will be fixed in the next update. And every software update improves the user experience, if only slightly.
How to Update Safari on Mac in 2023
When it comes to keeping Safari up to date, Apple has typically released new updates for their web browser through the Mac App Store. However, with the introduction of macOS Mojave 10.14 in 2018, Apple decided to bundle Safari updates into system updates within macOS, so that when you update macOS, Safari will also be updated.
For those with older Macs running macOS 10.13 High Sierra, 10.12 Sierra, 10.11 El Capitan or earlier, Safari will update via the Mac App Store. To update, first head to the Mac App Store and click Updates. Any pending macOS updates should be at the top of the list of updates. Click where it says More to see updates available for built-in apps like iTunes or Safari. If there is an update for Safari, you should see an Update button next to it next to Safari. The Safari update should take a few seconds to complete, depending on the speed of your internet connection. Once it’s done, Safari will now be up to date.
If you have a Mac running macOS 10.14 Mojave, 10.15 Catalina, 11 Big Sur, or 12 Monterey, your Safari updates will be handled through System Preferences. To update Safari on your Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the menu bar. Then choose System Preferences and go to Software Update. From there, click More Info and you should see Safari-specific updates listed if available. To install Safari updates, simply click the Install Now button.
