Alexa is Amazon’s smart assistant, and it works with many Amazon devices, including Echo smart speakers. You can use Alexa for all sorts of things, like controlling your smart home, making video calls, and ordering items from Amazon (although you probably don’t do that).

But you can also use Alexa to get help in an emergency. It’s not as simple as it sounds, though: You can’t just ask Alexa to call 911 or another emergency service directly unless you’ve already set them up with Echo Connect. Here’s how to do that right now, so that Alexa is there when you need to call it if something goes wrong.
So you can’t use an Echo speaker to ask Alexa to call 911. This is partly due to FCC rules that require devices with the ability to dial 911 to include location data and a callback number. Amazon used to sell the Echo Connect, which let you make phone calls from your landline using an Echo speaker. The company has discontinued the Echo Connect, but you can still find a number of them for sale on secondhand sites like eBay.
If you get your hands on an Echo Connect, here’s how to set it up. First, plug it into power and your phone jack. Next, open the Alexa app and tap the + icon in the top right. Next, tap Device and then tap Amazon Echo. You should see an option for Echo Connect: tap that and you should be set up.
