After seeing Slack and even Microsoft Teams take a significant share of the market with their well-thought-out group messaging interfaces, Google decided to throw its hat into the ring. And Google Chat, which you may have seen integrated into Gmail, is the clear champion. Google Chat isn’t all that different from what we already had with Hangouts, but it certainly packs more punch than its predecessor.

Google has long planned to replace Hangouts with Google Chat, and now it has quietly rolled it out to the public. Your Hangouts tab in Gmail should already have been replaced with Google Chat quick access. If it hasn’t happened yet, it will soon.
The Hangouts app is still around, but Google is not working on new features for the app and will roll them out directly to the Google Chat app.
