Next time you’re DJing at a party, don’t hand your phone over to someone and have them add a song to the playlist. Spotify’s new Jam feature lets you add a whole group of people to a playlist, allowing them to each add songs themselves, with results that can be either spectacular or disastrous.
Introducing Jam on Spotify
At its core, a Jam is a collaborative playlist, designed to be used by a group of people who are close to each other. As long as you have Spotify Premium, you can start a Jam and easily add anyone who has a Spotify account, paid or not. If you have the free version, you can’t start a Jam, but you can still join and add songs.
While all contributors can add to a Jam, only the host can reorder or remove songs from the playlist. This keeps the playlist from getting too chaotic and is a fun way to let one person DJ without having to create the entire playlist.
You can start a Jam by selecting a song or playlist in Spotify and tapping the three-dot menu or clicking the speaker icon. Once a host has created a Jam, they can choose to play the songs from their phone or laptop and cast them to any speaker. Spotify says that anyone on the same shared Wi-Fi network will receive an invite to join the Jam when they open the app. You can also invite more people by sharing a QR code or sending a link through a messaging or social media app.
