The State of the Union Address (SOTU) is an annual event (with some exceptions) at which the President of the United States delivers an address to a joint session of Congress to highlight the accomplishments of the past year and present the legislative agenda for the coming year.

When a new president takes office, his or her first address to a joint session of Congress is not called the State of the Union, even though it serves a similar purpose.
