Now that the cold weather is approaching and the fall garden chores are behind us, it’s time to hang up the garden tools for the season. But not before you’ve winterized them.

Performing thorough maintenance now will save you time in the spring when you can’t get outside. Plus, your tools will last longer and save you money by reducing wear and tear if you maintain them properly. If you’ve kept your tools clean all season, you may not have to do much to prepare them for storage, but here are the most important steps you should take.
First, make sure your hand tools (rakes, shovels, pruners, trowels, etc.) are clean and dry. Rinse off dirt with hot water and wipe the blades clean of sap and dirt. If there is stubborn mud, scrub it off with a stiff-bristled brush. Use sandpaper or steel wool to remove rust stains.
Next, sharpen any digging or cutting tools that have become dull. You’ll need some basic equipment, including protective clothing, so if you don’t have any on hand, consider taking your tools to your local hardware store or garden center to have them sharpened.
