Twitter is heading for the exit, and everyone is going to Mastodon. But will someone please remember the memes?
An Elven Tumblr Post
Tumblr was once the home of internet memes, but over the years, Twitter has become the primary place to create and exchange jokes/cultural reflections. But with Twitter in turmoil, where will the memes originate? Well, thanks to the open, interactive nature of the software that powers Mastodon, Micro.blog, and many other non-centralized social spaces, that place might just be Tumblr.
“Tumblr used to be one of the biggest meme factories in the world. It was a platform full of funny and creative content, but its popularity has since declined because it has become more of a platform for social justice and political activism,” Isabella Meyer, an art history, language, and psychology specialist and creator of the blog Art in Context, told Lifewire via email.
The news is that Tumblr will be adding support for ActivityPub, an open and decentralized social networking protocol. Think of it like email, an open protocol that anyone can use, a protocol that interoperates across different services. Right now, the social web is locked into proprietary and often private spaces. Facebook may seem like a huge open space, but if you’re not a member, most of it is blocked.
