YouTube's recent test of a more prominent "Watch on YouTube" button on embedded videos could have wider implications for the site and its users, experts say.

YouTube users have recently noticed a “Watch on YouTube” button on embedded video players. The icon, which appears in the bottom corner of a video embed, allows users to click through and continue watching on YouTube itself. By adding a more prominent button, experts believe YouTube will encourage more users to click through from the embedded site to YouTube itself.

"This is a natural progression for YouTube," Ed Laczynski, CEO of Zype, told Lifewire via email. "YouTube needs to grow like any other web company, and converting viewers from 'free riders' to website publishers (who don't pay to use the players, content, hosting or streaming) is one way to do that."

The “Watch on YouTube” button isn’t entirely new. Previously, users could select the YouTube logo, which was usually located in the bottom right corner of the player. When that wasn’t available, you could also select the video title to go straight to YouTube and watch the video. Now, however, YouTube is drawing more attention to the issue with a button that appears in the bottom left corner of the video player.
