Panic’s upcoming Gameboy-esque system looks set to offer a touch of retro gaming style, but without overwhelming you with the nostalgia you feel when replaying the games of your youth. And I’m all for that.

Retro gaming has been making a big comeback lately, and while it’s fun to replay the old-school titles that shaped gaming, you can miss out on the feeling and emotion that came with those remakes if you haven’t played the original. That’s why new systems like the Playdate, a small yellow Gameboy-esque device from Panic, are so exciting, as they combine the old-school graphics and visuals of those classics with brand new experiences.
“Playdate is an interesting newcomer because it's designed as a retro-style device with retro-style (but all-new) games,” Scott Willoughby, a game developer and chief operating officer at Brainium, told Lifewire in an email.
"This may have limited appeal for nostalgic players looking to relive familiar games (after all, they care more about the software than the hardware). This is more of a game design challenge: how do you create compelling new games within the interface and graphical constraints of this new device?"
