Links have been around the web for centuries, but now they’re taking over your text editing and note-taking apps.

IA Writer Review: Is It Worth It?

The latest version of the popular cross-platform text editor app iA Writer now includes inter-document links, a bit like the links on Wikipedia, except they connect your notes and documents. And iA Writer is far from the first app to do this. These days, there are a whole bunch of personal knowledge manager (PKM) apps whose whole point is to link to each other, but the idea of a personal wiki app is decades old.

"For me, wiki links are so useful because they reduce the friction of taking notes. I can fully focus on taking notes without having to think about how to sort and organize them. As long as I use the wiki links to connect my notes, they organize themselves," PKM app developer Daniel Wirtz told Lifewire via email.

When we say links, we mean that we can click or tap on a word (or a few words) in a text document, and it will open another document. For example, you might have a daily note with a to-do list plus links to documents you need to work on that day.
