Ikea's Kallax shelves have long been a favorite for storing records. Now Ikea is selling you something to play them on.

Ikea’s new Ikea Obegränsad collection consists of a very uncomfortable-looking armchair, a musician’s desk and a cool, angular record player. Of these, the Obegränsad record player is the most interesting: it will come as no surprise that Ikea is selling a table and chair again. But is this a sign that the return of vinyl is now fully mainstream? Or is this another one of Ikea’s decorative accessories that isn’t worth buying because of the sound?

"To me, this seems like a decent turntable for someone who's brand new to the hobby," Michael L. Moore of Devoted to Vinyl told Lifewire via email. "I think if the vinyl resurrection has caught your attention and you're eager to dip your toe in the water without spending a ton of money on a more expensive turntable, then this Ikea turntable (assuming you like the blocky aesthetic) is definitely one worth considering."

Ikea last sold a turntable in 1973; since then, vinyl has collapsed, come back, and now grows in popularity every year. And while much of the know-how behind the making of high-end cassette players, cassette tapes, and Polaroid film has been lost, vinyl records appear to have a viable future despite the industry’s troubles.
