Ikea hasn't always been known for pushing the tech sector forward. Cheap Swedish meatballs and complicated instructions don't count.
Say hello to IKEA Place
However, the retail giant is looking to change that perception with the launch of Ikea Kreativ’s Scene Scanner, as announced in an official blog post from the company. The virtual design tool uses handy AI-enhanced technology to let consumers try out furniture before they buy.
How does it work? Download and install the Ikea iOS app and scan your room with the built-in analyzer. You can delete any piece of furniture from the scan and replace it with something from the Ikea catalog. If you don’t feel comfortable scanning your own home, there are 50 virtual showrooms to arrange furniture in.
Scanning seems a bit of a chore, since it takes enough photos to create a panoramic shot and requires some smartphone rotation. However, according to Ikea, the software uses these photos to create an "interactive wide-angle replica of the space, with accurate dimensions and perspective."
