Low on hard drive or cloud space? Your images may be taking up space they don’t need. A free Mac app called ImageOptim, which I found on App Addict, can quickly reduce the size of an image without losing quality. There’s also a web version for anyone without a Mac.
The BEST FREE Image Compression Tool on Mac (MacOS)
Using ImageOptim is very simple: drag images into the interface and watch them get smaller.
By default, this compression is completely lossless, meaning that there is no loss of quality. This is done using a number of different free and open source image compression tools: MozJPEG, pngquant, Pngcrush, 7zip, SVGO, and Google Zopfli are all built in. These tools remove unnecessary information from images, meaning that there is no loss of image quality when using this tool. If you want the files to be even smaller, there is support for lossy image compression in the settings.
What I like about this application is how it supports a variety of macOS features. There’s support for Apple Shortcuts, which means you can build automations that compress images before sharing them. There’s also support for the Services menu, which means you can optimize an image by right-clicking on it in the Finder, checking the Services menu, and clicking Image Optimize.
