Instagram used to be a place where people went to see their friends’ photos, but that’s changed over time, and parent company Meta has faced criticism for it. Now, the company has announced plans to give people a way to take back control by allowing them to block certain types of content from appearing in their feeds, but some experts worry it doesn’t go far enough.
“Users want to know that their feed is curated for them — a personalized experience based on who they follow, what they search for, and the settings they select,” Sandra McLemore, president of marketing media company Travel Marketing and Media, told Lifewire via email. She added that Instagram “needs to find a way to value original content.”
Instagram, once a place where people went to see photos of their friends’ lunches and vacation getaways, has evolved into something else in recent years. Some Instagram users complain that the posts they see in their feed are little more than influencers “showing off” the same things over and over again.
