The fall detection feature on Apple Watch is an important “health feature” for Apple users, especially older users. Now, Apple is taking fall prevention a step further. Yes, you read that right. Apple is introducing a feature that allows your iPhone to measure your “walking stability” and warn you if you’re at risk of falling, effectively preventing it. Here’s how it works.
Track your health data via wearable devices
Walking Steadiness is the metric that measures and determines how stable or symmetrical your gait is. When you carry your iPhone around your waist (like in a pocket) and walk on flat ground, your iPhone will track and record measurements of your walking patterns. The data is collected over a few days, after which your iPhone will notify you of your walking stability, whether it is OK, poor or very poor.
If your overall Walking Steadiness scores are low, you are at risk of falling at some point in the next 12 months. This can be countered by exercises to improve strength and balance, some of which are recommended in Apple's Health App as short videos.
