Everyone suspected that Apple would jump headfirst into AI, and they were right.
iOS 18 and iOS 18.1 – Apple FINALLY Does It!
During today’s WWDC 2024 keynote, the company announced the addition of what it’s calling “Apple Intelligence” to all of its operating systems, but that’s not all the updates coming to iOS 18. There’s also new ChatGP capabilities, improvements to the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center, updates to the Photos app, more features (and more useful features) in Messages, and updates to Mail and Safari, too. Even Siri is getting some new tricks.
Starting with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s take on AI, Apple promised that it would be built with security in mind. According to the presentation, most of the AI processing that goes into apps will happen on the device, but it will include information for all aspects of your device, including email, messages, and even photos. There will be cases where the on-device AI can’t complete an action, and in those cases, Apple says the processing will be done in iCloud on private servers, and no data will ever be stored there.
That won’t be the only source of on-device AI, though. In what will come as no surprise following the announcement of OpenAI’s deal with Apple, Siri will also get access to ChatGPT, in addition to being powered by Apple Intelligence. You’ll be prompted to use ChatGPT before it launches, according to the demo given at WWDC, but the option will be there. And if you opt to stick with Apple Intelligence, Siri will still be able to assist in a highly customized way thanks to machine learning.
