iPad sales have plummeted since last year. Probably not coincidentally, Apple has not released any new iPad models in 2023. But fear not, iPad fans: that is about to change.
How Apple is going to make iPads AWESOME AGAIN!
Maybe it was the push to release the Vision Pro, or maybe it was the awkward transition to the M3 chip, or maybe issues with the slick new displays coming to the next iPad Pro (see below), but Apple seems to have put the entire iPad line on the back burner. And the tablet is starting to show its age, from the mediocre display in the iPad mini to, well, everything in the iPad Pro, which has barely changed since 2018. But it looks like all that will be forgotten next month, with a Cambrian explosion of new iPads.
"Given Apple's history and product release patterns, I don't believe Apple has abandoned the iPad in the same way it neglected the Mac lineup in the 2010s. Apple has a pattern of revitalizing its products with significant updates, and the iPad, a key player in its ecosystem, is no exception," software engineer Muhammad Qasim told Lifewire via email.
Apple reported its first quarter results last week and the iPad was down 25% compared to the first quarter of the previous year. Worse yet, this quarter was Apple’s second-best ever overall, making the iPad’s decline seem even more significant. Given the complete lack of new iPads last year, this might not come as a huge surprise. Combine that with the lack of any real reason to upgrade. iPads are generally durable and people can happily stick with them for years. I use my iPad more than I use my Mac, and I’m still happy with the 2018 Pro model.
