Traversing the stars is a beautiful experience, but it can be lonely when you’re out there alone. No Man’s Sky is home to many features that are best shared with others, including base-building, expeditions, and Discoveries. As such, players may be wondering whether crossplay compatibility will work.

NMS features cross-platform play, but there’s a catch: the full functionality of the cross-platform feature is only available to players on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, not to Nintendo Switch users. While the Switch does allow for some cross-platform play, it’s limited to NMS’s Discoveries feature.
Developer Hello Games added crossplay to NMS in 2020 when the open-world game first launched on Xbox Game Pass. The functionality allowed players to join lobbies with friends on other platforms, whether you're on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC, allowing players to run around planets and pilot their ships side-by-side.
NMS released on Nintendo Switch two years later in 2022, but players found that they could not group up with players from other lobbies. The Nintendo storefront page for NMS states that players can upload and share discoveries with other users, a unique feature that allows players to permanently name planets, solar systems, fauna and flora, but there is no mention of grouping up in a lobby with your friends. Users on Reddit recently reported that when playing on Switch, you cannot see other players like you can on other platforms.
