According to researchers, anonymous data collected through wearables such as smartwatches could be used to track users' personal information.

Using artificial intelligence, researchers were able to scan vast amounts of information collected by wearables and determine users' height, weight, gender, age and other characteristics, according to a recently published paper by scientists from the University of Cambridge and the Alan Turing Institute.

The identities of the people whose information was in the data have not been released, but experts say the research raises concerns about the privacy of the individuals who collected the data.

“Devices like smartwatches are not covered by HIPAA or other privacy laws, meaning any data collected can be traced back to the vendor. Additionally, most people inadvertently opt out of protection when they set up device software and ‘accept’ the terms of service,” attorney Heather Macre said in an email interview.
