Google's anticipated Pixel Fold phone won't be releasing in the near future, according to a report.
Google Pixel 9/Pro/Fold impressions: is it finally here?
Google was widely expected to announce or release a Pixel Fold phone in 2021. The phone was never officially announced, but leaked documents, supply chain rumors, and Google’s debut of Android 12L (a version of Android designed for foldable phones and tablets) suggested that a Pixel Fold was on the way. But according to a new report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), that’s no longer the case.
“DSCC has confirmed with its suppliers that Google has decided not to bring the Pixel Fold to market,” Ross Young, CEO of DSCC, said in the report on the company’s website. “Not in 2021 and reportedly not in the first half of 2022.”
Young's sources cite competition from Samsung as a major reason for Google's decision to cancel the Pixel Fold. According to DSCC, Samsung held an 86% share of the foldable phone market in 2021 and is particularly strong in North America, a key market for Google.
