Meta announced that it will begin labeling videos and photos created with AI starting in May, in a move that the company hopes will make content more transparent and transparent about how it was created across platforms.

Currently, Meta removes AI-generated content when it is detected, but only content that is “created or modified by AI to give the impression that a person is saying something they did not say,” according to a blog post by Monika Bickert, VP of Content Policy at Meta.
The company says it has been working with its Oversight Board to update its policies around AI-generated content. The previous approach was created in 2020, before the current explosion of AI media.
“We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is the best way to address manipulated media now and avoid the risk of unnecessarily restricting free speech. Accordingly, we are keeping this content on our platforms so we can add labels and context,” Bickert wrote.
