Can British creatives dream up the next Harry Potter or Marvel in a 'British context'?
That was the challenge James Graham raised this morning in the traditional Edinburgh post-MacTaggart broadcast, the morning after he spoke of the need for television's gatekeepers to encourage “new universes” rather than the temptation to opt for tried and tested IP.
The Dear England creator called for “encouragement and ambition” to imagine what “new Harry Potter universes or Marvel would look like in a British context”, and said writers should be given “opportunities and space”.
