Ubisoft has been receiving a lot of backlash lately for its decision to shut down The Crew's online functionality, effectively killing the game. Now, the sequel to a sequel, The Crew Motorfest, is being flooded with reviews by disgruntled gamers on Steam, leading to the game being sold for half price days after its launch.
THIS UPDATE ends the import of The Legacy Of The Crew 2 to Motorfest…
The Crew Motorfest originally launched in September of last year, but it only hit the largest PC storefront, Steam, three days ago on April 18th. It didn’t take long for the game to receive a wave of negative reviews, justified by gamers’ dissatisfaction with Ubisoft’s recent decisions regarding the original title. At the time of writing, The Crew Motorfest is sitting on a “Mixed” review rating, with recent reviews disabled entirely (likely by Valve) and the game itself selling for half price.
Most of the negative reviews seem to stem primarily from the End-User License Agreement (EULA), which states that players do not actually own The Crew Motorfest and are merely licensing it. The quality of the game itself doesn't seem to be a real issue for players, with one negative review summing up the situation nicely: "Honest review: game good, Ubisoft bad." Another player shared the hashtag #StopKillingGames and website, a campaign specifically designed to legally take on Ubisoft and their anti-game retention practices in an effort to change industry practices.
While many other companies in the industry have similar EULAs and have had them for decades, disgruntled fans seem to be targeting Ubisoft in particular due to its high-profile removal of previous titles. This most recently happened with the original The Crew, where Ubisoft decided to shut down the game’s servers, making it inaccessible to players. Ubisoft then began revoking players’ licenses, dashing any hopes for an offline mode.
