Kitaria Fables (Switch, Steam, PlayStation) is an intriguing game. It’s easy to dismiss as part Stardew Valley, part Zelda game, but it’s not quite that. Not as richly fleshed out in combat as anything Nintendo has accomplished in the past, and not so much a farming sim as Stardew Valley, Kitaria Fables is a beast in its own right.

Kitaria Fables is NOT what you think it is

It doesn’t always work, but when you realize this is a game developed by a team of just three people, it’s hard not to be impressed. It may not be perfect, but it’s still worth checking out, especially if you like old-school sensibilities alongside more modern RPG games.

The first thing you think when you boot up Kitaria Fables is almost certainly some variation on “Awww” or “So cute!” This is a cute game. There’s a loose plot of good versus evil at play, but honestly, it’s pretty basic stuff. You play as Nyan, a young adventurer trying to fix the world in a way that only young RPG heroes can.

What will enchant you in Kitaria Fables is the look of the characters. Who can resist a quest led by a slightly grumpy polar bear? It almost reminds me of a book series I read as a child, Redwall, where forest creatures take on human characteristics and emotions as they battle evil. Again, it’s not as fully fleshed out in Kitaria Fables, but it’s enough to make you more interested than if you were just hanging out with “normal” people.
