Given the massive success of Larian Studios' Game of the Year hit Baldur's Gate 3, many fans were surprised to hear that they would be sheathing the sword instead of making Baldur's Gate 4. However, there was talk of a sequel at one point.
8 Incredibly Hidden Interactions Revealed That Players Are Missing // Larian: Baldur's Gate 3 (NEW).
While the developers have floated ideas for a BG4 sequel, Larian's lead storyteller Adam Smith recently revealed in a conversation with GamesRadar that initial discussions "didn't excite anyone" and when everyone agreed there was no inspiration and nothing to build on outside of what they'd already done, it was shelved.
Ultimately, though, Smith's statement probably won't shock too many people; the BG3 studio admitted similar sentiments during a panel with IGN in March. The devs are super crazy about the world and the adventure they've created, Smith added, but the team wants to move on now — and they have every right to do so, even if the ever-expanding Baldur's Gate community has been expecting some expansions and DLC to eventually arrive.
The reason Larian isn’t developing BG4 in Smith’s revelation speaks volumes to the studio’s integrity and emphasis on creative vision. While some producers were eager to pull the trigger on a sequel to a hit because it worked and Larian could have likely ridden the back of BG3’s success forever, they decided to take the more creative route. In today’s games industry, it’s rare to see a studio put their creativity and passion above making money, and work on projects they don’t feel inspired to do.
