iOS 16.3 Hardware Security Keys Explained: Should You Use Them?
Apple has released iOS 16.3, version 16, which improves the security of your Apple ID, fixes a handful of other issues, and patches multiple security holes. It also includes 2nd Gen HomePod support and adds a new Unity wallpaper option in honor of Black History Month.
Security Keys for Apple ID claims to offer better protection for your account by requiring a physical security key (in addition to 2FA) when signing in to a new device. If it works as advertised, it should make it significantly harder for anyone to remotely hijack your Apple account.
iOS 16.3 also makes it harder to accidentally trigger Emergency Calls: you now have to press and hold the side button along with the up or down buttons, then release. Other fixes include a Freeform issue where some drawn lines wouldn’t appear in share boards, wallpapers disappearing on the lock screen, and lines appearing on the screen upon wakeup. Issues with inaccurate Home app status in the widget and Siri incorrectly handling music and CarPlay requests have also been addressed.
