The developers of Overwatch 2 published a blog outlining their thoughts on the current state of tanks this week, as well as the overall balance changes they plan to implement in the coming months. There are also plans to improve the overall archetype.
Tanks getting… MORE BUFFS? | OW2 Season 11 Developer Blog
The main goal of the June 28 developer update, posted on the official Blizzard blog, is to address player concerns about the tankiness and survivability of all tank heroes. Both developers and players have noted that Overwatch 2’s anti-heal passive makes it difficult for tanks to stay alive without serious help from their teammates, even after the tanking buffs introduced in Season 10.
The developers specifically noted that "both Support heroes should focus solely on the Tank to keep them alive", creating situations where all three players feel locked together for the duration of the match. This creates scenarios where certain damage dealers don't get any help from their supports, or damage-dealing supports like Illari can't move freely around the map to attack the enemy team.
The developers went further and discussed various hero stats they track, and added a new graph for the “tankiness” of each hero in the game. This graph tracks how often characters die during a match and how quickly they are defeated. The data is then compared to the number of times a hero is expected to die in a given match.
