Helldivers are trembling at the rumors that a much-feared enemy from the original Helldivers title could be making its way into the highly popular sequel. And they're right to be afraid, because it involves underground cover and… tentacles.
Helldivers 2 – Everything you need to know about the new enemies (mechanics and weaknesses)
Originating in the first Helldivers game, the Impaler is a Terminid tank bug that, at first glance, looks a bit like the Charger. However, it uses its claw-like head to impale you and your fellow Helldivers rather than charging headfirst. And it does so by burrowing its head into the ground and then shooting three sharp tentacles upwards, right beneath where you and your unsuspecting friends are standing. Sounds terrifying indeed.
The above post over on the always entertaining Helldivers 2 subreddit shows the work of a clever dataminer who tracked down some rather telling filenames entitled "Behaviorld_bug_impaler" and "Behaviorld_bug_impaler_tentacle". While the dataminer notes that "the model for the bug is not currently in the files" (leading even one user to speculate that it might just be clipped content), they do specify that these files were only recently added to the general files of patch 01.000.400. Suspicious, indeed.
Rest assured, like all the Terminid creatures in Helldivers 2, the Impaler shows its weakness when it buries its head – at least if its behavior in Helldivers 1 is anything to go by. When it buries its head in the ground, it exposes a set of vulnerable organs that certainly won’t hold out for long against the Helldivers’ powerful arsenal. Sounds like it could be a mess.
