Tencent Holdings and Logitech G are joining forces to create… a portable gaming console?
Logitech and Tencent Create a Cloud Gaming Handheld!
Don’t expect Tencent and Logitech’s hardware to directly compete with the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch, however, as the device (which appears to still be in the planning stages) will act as a cloud gaming hub. That means you won’t be buying physical games for it, or digital copies from a company-specific online marketplace. Instead, you’ll have access to multiple cloud gaming services from a single, travel-sized device.
“Multiple cloud gaming services” are supported, with Logitech noting that it is also working with NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming on the project. Whether this means the new device will support those services, just those services, or additional as-yet unnamed services remains to be seen. Either way, it does mean that you could be carrying around a handheld gaming system with the potential to play just about any PC game available on the service.
Neither Logitech nor Tencent have said how they plan to address game streaming limitations. These services can still be somewhat hampered by connectivity issues or slow internet connections, issues that are more likely to crop up when traveling. Unlimited access to multiple game streaming libraries might not be so impressive if you can’t find a strong enough signal at your hotel or on the train.
