The theme of today’s NYT Strands, “Looking for a Mate,” initially made me think of animals mating in the wild, which led me to look for words like “dance” and “court.” My first tip for you: This puzzle isn’t about that. Instead, focus on objects that come in pairs.

The Strands puzzle for May 17th is about objects that come in pairs or single objects that have two equal parts, such as scissors, although scissors is not an answer. This should help you make one or two correct guesses.
Start by thinking of everyday tools, clothing, and equipment that come in pairs and are not practical to use separately, such as a single shoe. Again, no answer. You probably have at least one of the answer words in a toolbox or on a shelf.
Today's Strands Spangram is "PAIRED", starting with "P" in the fourth row of the left column and moving to "D" in the right column, thus dividing the board in half. Three solution words are in the top half and four in the bottom, and interestingly enough, they are all singular.
