MagSafe is back on the new M1 MacBook Pro, but why did it ever go away?
I've Tried a Bunch of Magsafe Accessories: Here's Everything I Learned
One of the best features of the new MacBook Pro is its breakaway, magnet-powered MagSafe charging port. It’s convenient, it’s safe (of course), and it lets you know if your Mac is charged with a glance from across the room thanks to a built-in LED indicator. Countless Macs over the years have been saved by the breakaway connector that simply snaps free rather than dragging the poor Mac to its doom.
But if it's so good, why did Apple drop it in the first place?
“Apple pushed the Lightning port hard, and then USB-C to simplify ports and reduce cost,” web designer and educator Caleb Sylvest speculated in an email. “By having only USB-C ports on recent MacBooks, the computers were cheaper to produce and less complicated internally.”
