Less than a year after Mauga's explosive release, the Overwatch 2 balancing team is already busy devising major "adjustments" to the tank's capabilities and role.
25K DMG! GALE MAUGA OVERWATCH 2 GAMEPLAY SEASON 11
Mauga, the hero infamous for the mirrored tank meta upon launch, is a constant topic of conversation in Overwatch 2—and while fans have been publicly discussing the controversial character, Blizzard’s devs have been getting a behind-the-scenes look at him. Today, lead gameplay designer Alec Dawson revealed those plans during a keynote on Twitch, sharing plans to turn the bombastic warrior into a dive tank.
When asked specifically about Mauga's current placement in the OW2 meta, Dawson said that the tank is "average, slash slightly below average." He also noted that the hero is best utilized with a coordinated team that plays to his strengths, as in competitive.
Dawson indicated that the dev team has already toned down aspects of his kit, but they're still "looking at some longer-term things for Mauga" and "there may be adjustments needed along the way." Judging from Dawson's statements, the dev team seems interested in turning Mauga into a dive tank like Doomfist, specialized in quickly taking down squishy heroes.
