After feeling like her experiences on dating apps were not satisfying, Naza Shelley took matters into her own hands and created the video dating app CarpeDM Social to meet her needs.
Naza Shelley CarpeDM FULL EPISODE
The 3-year-old tech company uses a proprietary matching process that requires interested singles to video chat before they can text. But the iOS-exclusive app isn’t for just anyone: It’s specifically for singles looking to connect with professional Black women (initially in the Washington, D.C., area, with plans to expand to other cities), and there’s a membership process to even join the platform.
“We want to be a place where Barack and Michelle would have met on CarpeDM if they were dating online,” Shelley told Lifewire in a phone interview.
Although Shelley wasn’t initially interested in starting a startup, she found herself in the tech world while conceptualizing her company and she went for it head-on.
