Lionsgate has parted ways with Eddie Egan, the marketing consultant who created the trailer for "Megalopolis," which featured fake quotes from famous film critics.

The studio pulled the trailer on Wednesday after it emerged that quotes criticizing Francis Ford Coppola's previous work did not appear in the reviews at all and were instead made up.

Sources tell Variety that it was not Lionsgate or Egan’s intention to fabricate quotes, but rather a failure to properly fact-check and fact-check the sentences provided by the consultant. The trailer was intended to demonstrate that Coppola’s revered work, like “Megalopolis,” has received criticism. It appears AI was used to generate the fake critic quotes.

For example, the trailer claimed that Pauline Kael wrote in the New Yorker that “The Godfather” was “diminished by its artistry.” Kael actually loved the film.
