Privacy and safety are constant concerns when it comes to online spaces, especially for teens, and Meta is experimenting with more ways to improve both on its social media platforms. From new default settings and notifications to future additions that make it harder for adults with questionable motives to communicate with teens in the first place.

The most immediate change is to the new Facebook accounts, which now enable more privacy controls by default for all profiles created for anyone under the age of 16 (18 in some countries). All new Facebook accounts for teens will now automatically restrict who can view their friends lists, see the people and Pages they follow, see posts they’re tagged in, or comment on public posts. Of course, these tools and settings can also be manually enabled for existing accounts, regardless of age.

Additionally, notifications for teen users are being adjusted to encourage use of Facebook and Instagram’s reporting tools. One example is a new prompt that encourages them to report an account after they’ve blocked it, along with information on how to deal with potentially predatory messages.
