Virtual reality is currently in the hands of a few companies: Apple and Meta are the biggest names, but with Meta's latest announcement, that's all set to change.
Meta has changed VR forever! Open Horizon OS, new VR headsets and more!
On Monday’s Meta Quest Blog, the company announced that it is opening up its virtual reality operating system, which it is now calling Meta Horizon OS, to third-party developers so that they can create their own hardware based on the OS. Additionally, there are already a few companies working on new hardware that will take advantage of Meta Horizon OS.
Meta named three such companies in the announcement: Asus' Republic of Gamers, Lenovo, and Xbox. Asus plans to develop new virtual reality gaming headsets that use Meta Horizon OS, and Lenovo plans to "develop mixed reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment." And Xbox is working with Meta to develop a limited-edition Xbox-inspired Quest VR headset,
Meta also promises new features for the Meta Horizon OS. For example, the experimental App Lab will become much easier to find and a bigger part of your VR experience. This will give you much easier access to more of Meta's upcoming software and apps for VR.
