Microsoft has reportedly abandoned the HoloLens 3 as mixed reality developments are in a chaotic state and project employees are leaving the company.
Microsoft HoloLens 2 Review
According to a report from Business Insider, Microsoft shut down the project in mid-2021 and shifted its VR focus to a new venture with Samsung. This leaves HoloLens with an uncertain future as Microsoft wrestles with what to do with the technology.
HoloLens first launched in 2016 as a pair of mixed reality smartglasses that displayed information about the world around you, much like Google Glass. And like Google Glass, HoloLens has proven to be a huge flop.
The biggest problem with HoloLens is that the team doesn’t know which direction to go in, according to sources who spoke to Business Insider. On one side, you have the project leader who wants to make a mixed reality headset for the average consumer. On the other side, you have people who want to stay focused on HoloLens’ enterprise audience.
