Microsoft offers personal account users the ability to skip the password and sign in directly using more secure authentication methods.
Who Needs Passwords Anyway? With Microsoft
Passwords have been the standard for basic account security for decades, so why does Microsoft want to kill them? According to a new support page , it’s because passwords are no longer the most secure way to verify your digital identity. As Microsoft notes, passwords can be a risk because they can be stolen or even outright guessed.
So instead of passwords, the plan is to use other methods such as an authenticator, biometrics, SMS codes, and physical security keys. However, it is an opt-in option, so you can decide for yourself whether you want to stop using passwords or not.
This won’t necessarily make logging in any faster, especially if you’re used to keeping your passwords saved, but it would be more secure. The option is also reversible, so you’re not stuck if you delete your password and then decide you want it back.
