Microsoft has ventured into the tablet market in recent years with the aim of providing the full Windows experience in a compact device. Often, this involves a 2-in-1 solution that gives the user the accessibility and form factor of a touchscreen tablet, but with all the power of a full-fledged computer.

The Surface Go is a new addition to Microsoft’s Surface product line, this time aiming to offer a touchscreen-friendly Windows 10 experience at an affordable price. We put the Surface Go through its paces to see whether it’s powerful enough for those looking for a lighter laptop alternative, or whether it’s just a bloated piece of middleware with an identity crisis.

The Surface Go is a bit thicker than your average tablet, and looks considerably less modern than many of its top-tier competitors in this category (understandably, given its lower price point). Its 1800 x 1200 display is surrounded by thick bezels, which contributes to the device’s very corporate, dated feel. Still, unlike some of the competition, we think this device can survive a few clumsy knocks and drops. You also wouldn’t be too much of a problem leaving this one with a child.
