Microsoft found a winning niche between tablet and laptop when it first introduced the Surface Pro. It probably took until the third generation for it to really take off, but the combination of full-fledged laptop internals in a highly portable tablet form factor has won it a following. Many of the ways in which the Surface’s form factor excels only become apparent after you’ve used it for a while. The Surface Pro 7 transitions effortlessly from productivity to creativity to entertainment in a way that’s hard to match on any other device.

The Surface Pro 7 faithfully carries on the 2-in-1 series’ winning pedigree with few changes aside from some beefed-up internals and the surprisingly impactful introduction of a USB-C port. Microsoft seems to have made a mantra of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If you expect Microsoft to take more risks, you’d be better off looking at the Surface Pro X, which addresses some of the Pro’s design issues, like the size of the bezels.

If you’ve been looking for a Surface Pro 6 but have been putting off your purchase, the Pro 7 is an easy, logical recommendation with no real asterisks. But given the overall 2-in-1 laptop landscape, and the way Microsoft has priced the Pro 7’s various SKUs, is it still the best bang for your buck? Let’s take a look.
