Ditch your passwords and start using biometric authentication like fingerprints and facial scans, Microsoft says. Not so fast, some security experts object.

Passwordless logins should be the standard by next year, Microsoft recently said on its security blog . The company is touting Windows Hello, a biometric scanning tool that will let you log in to Windows 10 with your fingerprint. But some observers say you should hold off on embracing Hello.

“The use of biometrics as outlined in Microsoft’s plans is promising, but we should all be cautious about new versions and implementations of biometric authentication. We learned that when researchers showed that earlier versions of Apple’s FaceID could be fooled,” said Phil Leslie, co-founder of cybersecurity firm Havoc Shield, in an email interview.

"Would I trust Microsoft's biometric approach to passwords for a free web app with no payment information? Probably. Would I use it for my bank account right now? Not yet."
