At Microsoft’s Surface Event in Los Angeles this week, we laid out on the beach, created a piece of art together using our own drawings and text prompts, and even made cocktails using Copilot, Microsoft’s built-in generative AI product. We did it all on the company’s new Surface devices, under the helpful and friendly eye of various PR folks, and generally had a great time.
Microsoft's new AI Copilot+ PCs are here and they look fantastic!
The ease with which AI is entering PCs, as demonstrated by these Surface laptops, is going to change the game for everyone.
We first got to see how new neural processing units (NPUs) take a lot of the heavy processing off the CPU and GPU, making for fast, smooth results when using AI. We removed the background from a video in CapCut (a video editing app favored by TikTokers and other influencers) and then replaced it with a moving video background, all in about 15 seconds. There was literally no delay or lag. If you’re familiar with video editing on current laptops, you know that it can be a slow, tedious process.
I didn’t have to jump into a second app to carefully crop people out of their backgrounds, and I didn’t have to wait minutes for the app to remove the background. It just worked. In an age where everyone on TikTok, Reels, and other viral video platforms is doing some form of video editing, this is going to make things so much more accessible.
