Midland GXT1000VP4 review: the good, the bad and the ugly!
Two-way radios are supposed to be a simple and reliable way to communicate without the need for cell towers or satellites. However, these handy devices are often hampered by poor sound quality, limited range, and difficulty overcoming interfering obstacles. We put the Midland GXT1000VP4 to the test to see if it avoids these common pitfalls and offers enough extras to justify its premium price.
The Midland GXT1000VP4 is made from durable plastic and feels like a unit that can withstand a few knocks, although the plastic screen will likely pick up some scratches over time. The belt clip is also plastic, but has a metal hinge and spring that should prove more durable, and the buttons are rubberized and pleasantly tactile. They’re large and easy to operate, even with gloves on.
The headphone and microphone jacks are covered by a rubber cap that snaps in place to prevent dust and moisture from getting into these delicate interfaces. Overall, the GXT1000VP4 is fairly weatherproof, with a JIS4 weatherproof rating. You won’t want to dunk these in a lake, but they should be able to withstand a rain shower or a splash from a canoe paddle. Weatherproofing also means these radios won’t be bothered by dust and dirt, contaminants that can be just as deadly to electronics as water.
