Monster Hunter Rise is oddly inaccessible and unnecessarily complicated, much like Monster Hunter: World, but at least in this game I have a giant dog to ride around on.

Why Everyone's Playing Monster Hunter World and Not Rise (and What This Means for Wilds)

Rise may be one of the best co-op games on the Switch, but it’s the kind of game you need a mentor for, or even a full-on level 101 college course to get into. From the get-go, Rise is a nest of menus, submenus, radial menus, incessant tutorials, and rules upon rules, with each new weapon, mechanic, and monster presenting a new set of fun facts to know and tell. It’s astonishing that a series this beloved can also be this hard to get into.

If you have a group of friends to roll with, a few days to get over the learning curve, and an immense amount of patience, Rise eventually develops into a rewarding, open-ended experience. “Eventually,” however, does a lot of work in that regard.

In Monster Hunter Rise, you are once again a rookie Hunter in the Guild, this time protecting your hometown, the rural village of Kamura, from an impending onslaught of monsters known as the Rampage. Your task is to first bolster Kamura’s defenses and replenish his supplies in preparation for the approaching swarm, and then to gain enough experience and firepower to help fend it off.
