When the next version of macOS comes out this fall, it will include a bunch of handy “window” tiling features that will make using your computer a lot easier and less tedious. These new tiling and auto-snapping features may be new to the Mac, but they’re old news to users of Microsoft’s Windows, and Mac users have been enjoying third-party apps like Many Tricks’ Moom for years. But with Sequoia’s new windowing tools and a brand new version of Moom available now, the Mac windowing scene is about to heat up.
“Yes, if you just want some basic window-organizing functionality, you can get that from Sequoia. But if you want customizability and functionality far beyond anything Apple will ever offer, […] Moom will deliver,” writes veteran Apple journalist Jason Snell on his Six Colors blog.
Laptops are a bit of a nightmare when it comes to managing open windows. There are tools to help. On the Mac, you can minimize windows to the Dock, or hide them with a keyboard shortcut (⌘-H). And over the years, Apple has tried a few different ways to deal with lots of windows on a smaller screen. Exposé, which gives you a zoomed-out view of all your open windows, even has a dedicated key on the top row of the Mac keyboard. But in real life, most of us are constantly moving windows around as we switch between documents and apps.
