Valve’s slow releases have been an industry joke for years, but hero shooter Deadlock is already looming on the horizon. Like most major projects these days, it’s prone to leaks, with the latest batch revealing a surprising amount of in-depth information about the game’s mechanics.
New Valve Game, HUGE Leak
Valve invented the hero shooter genre with Team Fortress 2 , and now it’s clearly looking to repeat that success with Deadlock . The game will reportedly borrow mechanics and possibly even characters from Dota 2 , which seems to imply that no one at Valve remembers the fate of the last Dota spinoff. While it hasn’t been officially announced yet, there have been a few leaks revealing behind-the-scenes footage, including this most recent one today.
This new leak comes from Reddit and consists mostly of several out-of-context clips ranging from a few seconds to just under four minutes in length. Much of it will seem familiar if you’ve seen previous leaks, but there are a few new notable details that deserve closer inspection.
The first and most obvious is Deadlock’s shop interface, which allows players to purchase upgrades at certain points on the map. According to the leaks, you’ll earn currency called Souls during each match by stealing them from enemy players in a short window after killing them. These can then be used to enhance your character’s abilities, both passively and actively, and can be traded for temporary buffs and upgrades at one of the aforementioned shops. Most of the upgrades shown were fairly mundane, like increased ammo capacity or more stamina, but it’s a good bet that they’ll become more meaningful and diverse as a match goes on.
