Almost everyone compares Mortal Shell to Dark Souls. And that's not only because the game is clearly inspired by Dark Souls, but also because such games can be quickly understood by comparing them. Mortal Shell can be described as just a small part of Dark Souls, which justifies its price ($30). But that's not all Mortal Shell has to offer. Cold Symmetry really tried their best to put a twist on the gameplay to make it stand out from the rest. After investing many hours exploring the game and finally finishing it, here's what I think of Mortal Shell.

Mortal Shell Review

The beginning of Mortal Shell is a bit slow, but so are souls-like. But the more you play and the more you explore, the more you’ll find yourself in the majestically poisonous world of Mortal Shell. You start out as a faceless and voiceless Foundling (as described in the game), who with some magic can get into the remains of the dead. These are what are called shells, hence the name Mortal Shell. It’s a twist on the game that hasn’t been offered by other games of its kind.

The game has four shells that each have their own unique abilities. All of these shells are scattered throughout the in-game world. While some are easily accessible, others are hard to come by. You should select the best one for you based on your playstyle. If you prefer an evasive style, Tiel is the best choice for you. He has a large stamina bar but can be taken down with just a few hits. My personal favorite is Solomon with a well-balanced health and stamina. The other two shells in the game are Harros and Eredrim. Harros is the first shell you will find with balanced stats but a bit slower. Eredrim has a longer health bar than his weapon with stamina that can drain quite quickly.

The game has two chances to bid, which is again something that is not very common. If your health is low, your Foundling form will come out of the shell. But that is not the end. You have one more chance to return to the game, but without taking a hit. If you succeed, your health and stamina bars will be fully replenished. But if you die the second time, it is over.
